Dear Sir,
It was such a pleasure to discover a fellow Oxonian (albeit of a visiting variety) while surfing the Russian web.
Forgive me for leaning heavily on this proverbial old boys network of ours, but as we still dare to murmur quietly “if you survive Oxford you shall survive everything”, thus who else should I turn to but a fellow punter.
Briefly about myself, MA in PPE at Brasenose, then D Phil in Middle Eastern History at Jesus, then joined the Green Jackets for a spell in exotic places. Having retired (with full honours of course) was admitted back to the digs to join the timeless quest for this ever evasive Holy Grail of “independent pursuit of knowledge and academic excellence”, as our dear old bunter of a charter puts it and have been contemplating my most exalted donish navel ever since.
Though I cannot complain, after all, the high table is still the high table even in St Antony’s, of all places I am seriously contemplating a move to Russia in order to pursue an old research interest of mine and do some teaching there.
Thus, may I take the liberty of offering my application for a teaching position at your school for your kind consideration? I gather that I am equally qualified to teach both English and History as well as Military Science if the need arises. Due to my other engagements and pursuits I should be able to accept only a part-time appointment; nevertheless, I shall assure you of my most sincere dedication to my teaching and tutorial responsibilities as well as of my adherence to the highest possible academic and disciplinary standards.
I am also a rather fluent speaker of the Russian language – they teach it well at Sundherst, though it might be getting a bit rusty because of its disuse or, shall I frankly put it, rather misuse.
Thus I would appreciate your sympathetic consideration of my application and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
I remain faithfully yours,
Sir Alistair Cavendish-Smyth, D. Phil.,
Lt. Colonel Green Jackets (retired),
OBE, StGC, FRAS
